Advocacy for Health Rights of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs)
For many of Uganda's estimated 4.5 million persons with disabilities, seeking healthcare means confronting multiple barriers including physical inaccessibility of facilities, communication barriers for those with sensory impairments, stigma from healthcare providers, and prohibitive costs of specialized care. These challenges create a double burden for PWDs: managing their conditions while navigating a healthcare system not designed with their needs in mind, resulting in poorer health outcomes and exclusion from essential services.

ADRIVUYO Uganda has developed a comprehensive advocacy strategy that equips PWDs with knowledge about their health entitlements through "Know Your Rights" workshops, conducts sensitivity training with healthcare workers, develops accessible health information in multiple formats (Braille, large print, audio, sign language), and works with disabled people's organizations to push for inclusive health policies. Our community-based monitoring approach empowers PWDs themselves to track improvements in healthcare accessibility, creating accountability while building a movement for inclusive health services from the ground up.

Our work in sexual and reproductive health rights for PWDs has been particularly groundbreaking, challenging harmful myths that PWDs are asexual or shouldn't have children while ensuring that family planning services, maternal healthcare, and HIV prevention programs are both physically accessible and attitudinally welcoming. Our adapted SRHR education curriculum for youth with intellectual disabilities fills a critical gap, while our broader advocacy has led to measurable improvements: 40% increase in PWDs utilizing health services, 75% of trained health facilities implementing basic accessibility features, and 60% reduction in reported discrimination incidents.
